Ma belle Happy !
I left the States on the Fourth of July, arriving in Paris on the fifth. After relaxing a bit at David's expansive and expensive flat, we joined Marion for dinner in the Quartier Latin.
The atmosphere was even more festive than usual, given the imminent World Cup game between Les Bleus and Portugal. It was fairly quiet for most of the game, as everyone was glued to one of the many TVs in bars and restaurants throughout the area, quietly watching and commenting. That was : until the French scored their goal. I'm sure that the Brits across La Manche could have heard to screaming. The normally quiet, unflappable French went bonkers : car horns honking non-stop, dancing, partying, yelling, drinking, tricolor-waving, shirtless guys jumping in pools (one of my personal favorites!), hanging out of cars careening through the city. Amazing!
It took us forever to get back to his flat in near the Porte Maillot, since the Metro was jammed by celebrators. And then the Metro was shut down for security reasons. So: lots of walking, in search of an unhired taxi, which we finally found about 1am.
Can you imagine what this city will be like this Sunday, for the game with the Italians? -J.B.
